Membership Application

The Bristol Medico-Chirurgical Society was established in 1874 for the advancement of the Art and Science of Medicine in all its branches. It has a long and rich tradition of encouraging the exchange of facts and fellowship between disparate members of the medical fraternity.

Each year it plays host to many debates and dissertations on topics of medical and allied interest, as well as visiting hospitals, laboratories and other sites relevant to the annual theme chosen by the Society’s President. Guest speakers of renown are invited to talk on diverse subjects, and meetings are followed by a meal to extend the opportunity for friendly exchange. The summer meeting has a tradition of including a social extravaganza.

The society attracts a membership of around 500, of whom the majority are practicing or retired doctors, with representatives from all specialties. Medical students are encouraged to join the Society, and non-medical colleagues with an interest in medicine and debate may apply. Members are welcome to bring guests to meetings.

The Society contributes several journals to the Bristol University Library, and in return, members enjoy rights of access to the Library and University car parking. The Society also sponsors a number of bursaries for doctors in training. Meetings are PGEA approved and may in due course be eligible for individual specialty college CME credit.

Meetings will be held at 7.3Opm on the second Wednesday of each month from October to May, with drinks before and dinner afterwards. Members are notified beforehand of the venue for each meeting.
